Hi Jekka. I've been a combination of busy & morose. Everyone here is morose with good cause. Rain, rain, & more rain - never ending it seems & often coming down in torrents! Crying or Very sad Everyone is so sick of it. My world is soggy, dripping, & grey. I can't believe it & we have nothing but more rain in the forecast for at least the next week! What's past that? Long range forecast is for a very wet spring so you guess. I'm growing gills!!! Shocked There is a high likelihood of serious flooding here as the spring warms up with our heavy rains & deep snow packs in the mountains. With all this & the fact we live in a seismographically active zone (a major earthquake is long overdue & with lots of little rumblings), I've prepared a big disaster kit to keep us going for 2-3 weeks.

With this constant dampness. the old injuries in my shoulders hurt much worse & being on the computer, with my arms on the mouse or keyboard makes it worse so I haven't used my computer much. Sorry that I haven't been around here.

So, how about a link to the beetle you're referring to? I'll do my best to find out what it is. Of course, beetles can be a little different here from another place in the world but I'll try. Remember, there are something like 350,000 known species of beetles in the world. Biologist JBS Haldane once said that he though the Creator had an "inordinate fondness for beetles" due to their abundance & variety. Wink

Isomorphix, you should move south of Vancouver, long way away from there.
Ask Evodevo to say you where Wink
Thereabout where sun shines all the time. I would like to move there too!
Evo, find some old house for one homeless, please! I am coming!
I just have to swim over the ocean Laughing

Sladolez are you planning on swimming to Costa Rica? Laughing Laughing I agree that is where Iso should go would certainly help with her aching bones!
I am definitely going there for my holiday when I have saved enough money.

Iso,Iso,Iso, You poor thing and I was moaning Shocked It really does sound like you need to live somewhere else. Sounds like you may have to swim for it with all that rain. What I would like to know is if you and I are getting all the rain, who is going without? Rolling Eyes and what old injury in your shoulder? What did you do to it?
Don,t know how you can live in an earthquake zone. It would terrify me. One of the benefits of England is everything is in moderation. Few poisonous creatures. Few extremes of weather and the most pathetic earthquake rumbles ever. Wouldn't even register .0005 on the Richter scale.
Anyway the beetle. I just looked on google til I saw one that looked like Kuchlars and decided that that must be the one. Look at Kuchlars photo on pg1 of this thread and see if you know which one it is. I was just guessing.
Hang on in there Iso spring is on its way! Mr. Green

I have no money for plane or ship, so I must swimming! Laughing
Have a nice holiday! Think of me when you walk around barefooted during the sun is shining and the sea murmuring Wink

Oh, I quite like your English, Slad Applause & like Jekka said, it's poetic.

Jekka, I'm not sure about the beetle. My identification books only cover North American insects or other things where I live.

I hate the endless rain but I love this area & couldn't afford to move besides. This rain is unusual but so is much of the weather around the world. Global warming isn't just warmer temperatures but more frequent & extreme weather happenings. We're supposed to have some sun on Monday so will look forward to it. Rain is to come back by Tuesday though.

There seems to be hazards no matter where one lives. The only really 'safe' place is St. Helena where Napoleon was exiled. It doesn't get hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, & was the only place on the Earth that escaped the great influenza epidemic in 1918 that killed around 20 million people.

As for earthquakes here, Jekka, many places have the possibility of one happening. I made sure our home is as safe as one can be & the base of the ground underneath is rock so much safer. Something that wasn't known even a decade or less ago was that there can be very big earthquakes but in slow motion - magnitude 7 or greater - over a period of a few weeks. It may be that a big sudden one won't come but instead a slow earthquake. Damage to buildings can still occur but they can be fixed & there's not the great losso of life, if any, with slow earthquakes. As I said before, sciences is a love of mine & I've studied various fields of science, some in university but mostly on my own, for many, many years. Wink

Oh, the old injury, Jekka - I fell out a moving car (flung out by the old backward facing doors & just missed the wheel) when I was a child & hurt my shoulders. They were hurt off & on as I grew up & never properly healed. I guess you wouldn't believe it was an old war injury, would you?

I think I figured out what Kuchlar's green beetle is - but don't quote me on this as they can look so similar & sometimes the ways to check what they are, aren't easy to do. For example, with some, you need to count the number of joints in their legs (as some vary depending on whether it's back, middle or front legs). Others have different ways their antenna are, even if they might look similar. In some, the males differ quite a bit from females so without having both sexes to check, it's not always possible to know.

But I'm fairly sure it's Slad's beetle #4 - Protaetia aeruginosa, also called Cetonischema aerugionosa or even Protaetia cetonischema aeruginosa (somebody's having fun naming them Wink ). The scutellum (that triangular part at the very front of the wing casings) is quite pronounced as it should be. The body is stocky but somewhat flattened, the head is somewhat spade-shaped & held bent down, the elytra (wing casings) aren't ribbed but smooth & slightly pinched in at the sides, & the legs are green & the right shape (can't count the joints or check the antenna properly though). And Slad's beetle #4 is known as a flower beetle & is found in Europe & Cyprus so I'm sure it's in Malta too. And it can have a bronze luster to it at the right angles.

Here's 2 more photos to check out.
Cetonischema aerugionosa
Protaetia aeruginosa

Congratulations, Slad!! Applause
