I have a few trees that a took as saplings this spring, some early summer. They are all potted in clay pots and since the heat became unbearable and I have need to use the air conditioner more frequently I have noticed that the mineral deposits on the side of the pots have increased exponentially and become slimy. Also, I have moved a Japanese Maple, an Oak and a Lilac all in 3" pots out of the window sill and under a grow light as they were getting too big for the sill and not getting light over the whole plant. The three trees I moved to under the grow light have started getting nasty little winged bugs that somewhat resemble fruit flies, except they seem to stay right on the pots. I haven't seen them on the leaves yet and I sometimes see them run into the soil when they get scared from the water bottle when i water the trees.

So, after that lovely introduction to my problem, my question is:

Would it be harmful/helpful to soak the pot with the tree in it in a water-apple cider vinegar solution? I would like the spray the leaves with this too, but I don't want to hurt the plant.

After doing a lot more reading, it seems that I have fungus gnats. Also, I read that vinegar (even the less processed apple cider vinegar) is very bad for the plant. It drastically lowers the PH level in the soil and can kill the plant. The treatment I read to be best for these little buggers is to keep the soil dry by watering only when the soil completely dries out and watering only enough to moisten the soil. This will eventually cause the bugs to die. The more immediate solution is to spray/mist a bit of rubbing alcohol onto the soil top. Hope this helps someone else too.
